To be fair that is a rhetorical question, in so much as it depends entirely on your mindset. Yet by the same token, affirmations can have a positive effect on your mindset; so it’s a bit of a catch 22.
“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.”
What you have to be aware of (if you’re not already) is, just like the famous Henry Ford quote, it doesn’t matter what you say to yourself either out loud or in your head, you’re right. So if you’re in the doldrums, where you don’t think anything is working for you and you ‘affirm’ that to yourself in both your internal and external dialogue, then that will directly determine your mood and be confirmed in your feelings.
On our shoulders we have THE most amazing supercomputer. This supercomputer is divided into two parts, conscious and subconscious. The conscious is the walking, talking, controlling, (over) thinking mind. Whilst the subconscious is the breathing, bike-riding, car-driving mind. These are all things that we don’t have to think about or relearn everyday – can you imagine learning to breath or how to drive a car every day!
Over time, what we learn with our thinking mind finds it’s way into our subconscious, so that we don’t have to relearn it. That’s why it takes a minimum of 21 days of doing an activity before it becomes second nature or rather before it becomes a habit. For example; if you call your mum every morning at 10am for 21 days or longer, it will become a habit and you will do it automatically.
So what does all this have to do with affirmations I hear you ask? Well simply put, if you want to change your mood, feelings and (potentially) ultimately your life, you need to commit to positive affirmations for at least a minimum of 21 days. Because your subconscious mind doesn’t know whether what you’re telling it is real or not. You can tell it what you want, and trust me you do on many many occasions, “I can’t do that”, “I can’t afford that”, “He won’t call me back”, do these (and countless others) sound familiar? As a consequence you get bummed out, which you feel deep in your very soul. My Spidey Senses tell me that this is resonating with you.
What can you do to reverse this? Well anyone that knows anything about the Law of Attraction will know how important positive affirmations are to creating the life of your dreams. Jack Cranfield talks about the daily practice of reciting affirmations it in his blog. Here’s your ultimate guide to creating, writing, saying and reading positive affirmations.
